What have you seen and where? Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas related I mean.

Today at one of the local stupidmarkets; Christmas chocolates and the big tins of speciality cookies (biscuits they call them over here)

Friday last week; Halloween gear in the £ shop (Brit equivalent of your Dollar Store)

And all the card shops have got at least some Christmas cards in and on the shelves.

Fall decorations in abundance at the nearest mall. Halloween stuff is out, but only three aisles so far in the local Wal-Mart.
Aside from the odd Christmas cards and craft materials, it's our Hallmark store that pleased me today with at least four shelves of Christmas ornaments and Willow Tree nativity pieces. There is a Keepsake ornament that caught my eye, but I didn't pick it up because I was shopping for Birthday presents. It was a key wind ornament of Snoopy conducting the Peanuts Gane in a festive carol.
Last year's only Christmas surivor that I could find was a black bear with a Christmas hat holding a sign that lights up reading Merry Christmas and he's holding a velvet strap with bells on it that jingle has he moves. His mouth opens and closes as he sings. The fur felt like a Gund product, but it's not quiet that quality.

Wrapping paper at the local supermarket. Out near the checkouts. Not in the section this store sets aside for seasonal items.

Boy you should hear the grumbling from the shoppers too. Yes, I stroll around eavesdropping. 8)

Much tutting, rolling of eyes and comments like "it gets earlier every year!".... :P

No sign of any Halloween stuff in my immediate area yet. Not surprising though. Its never caught on in England.

Christmas sighting spotted in my fridge, thanks to my thoughtful husband.

Yes indeed folks, Christmas is surely on the way - got eggnog?

I do. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y273/AuntieMistletoe/ThirstyGal.gif Mmmmmm - still tastes as good as I remembered.

Well the Halloween stuff is out. I saw pumpkins today! Not big ones, but decent for England. Made me smile, it did!

The Christmas items are rolling out more and more. I'd say by mid-October most stores here will be fully stocked.

I passed a house on the way to the store tonight that still had their tree up and lit. My boy saw it to and commented that everyone should have their trees down by now. I immediately thought of those who have their trees up all year and change the decorations for each of the holidays.

Wrapping paper, cards and some decorations are out. I think once we get past mid-month, it'll be all go for the retail sector.

The mall was full up today, considering the Planet is supposed to be heading for a major recession depression.

I was in there Monday and checked out the summer seasonal just knowing it had to be marked down. Nope, guess summer is still going strong here.

But after you posted this last night I decided to swing by today. Still nothing except one of the ladies putting out a small display box of pumpkin Snickers. But Monday I did see her unboxing something I want to say was maybe Christmas because I heard another one of the ladies there comment it was waaay to early to be receiving that stuff yet.

Hobby Lobby in the town to the north of me has nothing- the one to the south of me already has tons of fall/Halloween/Christmas stuff. I was so tempted to buy stuff but I have to wait until I am done with school stuff first. I still spent an hour and a half looking.

Really? I've never tried them, but their touted as being cleaner and more eco-friendly. Not much good tho if they don't burn properly. I'd love to get some proper beeswax candles but they're too pricey for every day use.

Yes Merry Sage, I had heard the same thing so I was excited to try them. But like the beeswax ones they are too expensive for what they do.

Or should I say what they dont do. Erv, I'm not picky either. Well I prefer cheap with a strong smell but anyway...these soy ones I bought only burnt right down the middle. Just followed the wick. So I ended up with a jar full of wax with no way to burn them. Unless I used a warmer and I'm not really fans of those either.

The fall scented Mainstream candles (isn't that the brand?) that Wal-Mart sales are wonderful. Very strongly scented and cheap! But still not out as of this past weekend.

We do have a candle company here in our great state, around 2.5 hours northwest of where I live. Tom promised me a trip up there this September to stock up. Now they have cheap candles that are strong and I do mean strong!! www.russellvillecandles.com (http://www.russellvillecandles.com)

I dont know if they ship or how much but right now I have their gingerbread, harvest and pumpkin candles. And each of them make my house smell like I have been baking.

ElfinErv
08-06-2009, 09:11 PM
I don't like the warmers, yes they are safer than a burning candle but in my experience I don't get the good smells either

Merry
08-07-2009, 04:18 AM
I must be different than everyone else in that I don't like strong scents.

My advice is to use plain, unscented candles for decoration and switch to essential oils or eo granules for fragrancing. Safe, clean, therapeutic and the scents are much nicer.

Try any of the citrus oils with one of the spice oils to re-create that "Christmas" smell. Eucalyptus, frankincense and peppermint eo make what we call "Mistletoe". :1smiley008:

Christy Carol
08-07-2009, 04:40 PM
Erv, the warmers to me seem like the remove the scent. The first warming might be ok but then the candle seems to lose its scent. I think we have talked about that before.

Merry, I do have certain oils and scents that I use. Alot of reed diffusers with Autumn and Christmas scents. But there is still something comforting about seeing a lit candle on a cold winters night!

ElfinErv

Christy Carol
08-07-2009, 06:03 PM
Do you remember those vanilla candles from the late 70's early 80's? It seems like the schools always sold them as some sort of fundraiser. They came in really long, tall glass containers and had a long silver wire to put your match on so that you could reach down in them to light without burning your fingers.

I LOVED that vanilla! To me it was the best vanilla ever. And I can not find that vanilla scent anywhere. These now days are too...I dont know. They just aren't the same.

They had one set up at the door so I didn't see how much or anything but I am thinking I need one. The bulb in the lamppost has that flicker effect so it was really spooky! ;-)

Almost forgot this. Walmart has Febreze scented candles and 2 packs of air fresheners for 5 bucks. I dont care for their candles but I got the autumn spice and crisp spray and it smells like heaven on Earth!

They also have their fall reed diffusers out. You can buy the singles for 4 bucks or a two pack for 8. I went with the 2 pack, one pumpkin pie, the other spiced cake. The spiced cake wins, hands down! The other two pack is mulled cider and cinnamon spice (or stick, I cant recall). But unlike last year these are really strong. I have one in my kitchen and one in my living room and both are taking over the entire house.

I had a bunch of birthday cards to get today (there's five of 'em between now and the end of October) and I noticed the card shop I used has a lot of its Christmas stock set out for purchase.

On our way home today we decided to take the back roads and drive around for a bit. Guess alot of folks have been bitten by the fall bug because I saw plenty of scarecrows and pumpkins on front porches. I think I even saw a few bats hanging from a porch eve but couldnt tell for sure. But it sure was nice seeing all the fall decor. Now to get mine done! Atleast I do have the wreath on the front door.

Got another Pumpkin Pie candle too. And yes, they are really strong. Like a Yankee but cheap. And the maple scent is Maple Sugar.

I bought one of these candles today... I DOES smell good!! :1smiley001: I love it! :)

I dont think these were real. I havent seen any either even though I did see a new pumpkin patch not 20 minutes away from home yesterday. I think it said it opens in a few weeks but I'm not sure. Guess they had a better year than I had.

Yeah, I saw those at Garden Ridge for the first time a few years back. They are high dollar too! And with my luck I would mess it up and have to start all over with a new one.

Christy Carol
09-07-2009, 04:17 PM

well thats a start. I am surprised the author of this article thinks its gonna be a good Black Friday. Last week they said the sales for back to school were horrible this year.

I bet they do! We cant have candles or warmers at work so last week I went and bought me a pumpkin spice reed diffuser for my office. By Friday it was really strong in there, I bet its even stronger tomorrow after being closed up tight with no a/c on for 3 days.

I pitched my warmer, didn't like it

Christy Carol

I dont like them either. Seems like it sucks the scent out of the candle after a warming or two.

My dad used one of mine as a coffee warmer until I found him a true blue warmer. Then he hated it and went back to the candle warmer.

Christy Carol

He did! He said the candle warmer kept his coffee hotter. The coffee warmer kept it lukewarm and he hated that.
